HUDA ALHARBI
The ESL program in Ahmed’s school is created to support students whose first language is not English. These learners may have some difficulties in acquiring their second language with their teachers in regular classrooms, such as in reading, writing or even math, so the ESL teachers use the learners’ school district’s curriculum to make up what they did not achieve in their regular classes.
Every day these students meet their ESL teachers for at least 30 minutes to work with them in class, in small groups or on a one-on-one basis in which the ESL teacher can check on the learners’ learning and assist them with their struggles to increase their acquisitions of their L2.

In this ESL program, the teachers use the learners’ school district’s curriculum and also incorporated visuals and activities based on the learners’ need. For example, since Ahmed was a limited English speaker, mastering everything his peers know or have learned is not always best. Hence, his ESL teacher focused on the main areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking by making lessons that appropriate to his proficiency level.
